Natural History of the SF Bay Area With Diane West-Bourke DIRECTIONS TO HIKES — WINTER 2010 (Meet at 10 AM at trailhead unless noted otherwise. Distances approximate—check local maps.)
CANADA DEL ORO From Hwy 101 S in San Jose, exit W on Bailey. Turn LF onto McKean, skirting Calero Park. Turn RT onto Casa Loma Road; continue about 1 mile to parking area on LF.
CRYSTAL SPRINGS—Pulgas Water Temple From Hwy 280 in Woodside, exit W on Edgewood Road. Turn RT onto Canada Road. Within 1 mile, turn LF & park in the Pulgas Water Temple lot, just N of Filoli.
LOS GATOS CREEK PARK & VASONA—bring binoculars From Hwy 17, exit W on Camden/San Tomas. At the first exit (1/4 mile), turn RT onto Dell Ave. Follow Dell under the expressway, past Sunnyoaks, to a small entry lane into the park on the LF. Park near entry.
PESCADERO BEACH & MARSH —bring binoculars Initially meet in the paved parking lot immediately S of the Pescadero Creek Bridge along Hwy 1, about 15 miles S of Half Moon Bay (OR 42 miles N of Santa Cruz). We may move our cars during the day to access best birding areas.
PINNACLES NATIONAL MONUMENT (10:30)—EAST ENTRANCE Special “Long Day” excursion. Take Hwy 101 S to Gilroy. Exit S on Hwy 25. About 30 miles S of Hollister (a scenic cruise), turn RT on 146 and continue into park entrance. Meet near Visitor Center where entry fees are paid. Bring your camera!
POGONIP From Hwy 17 in Santa Cruz, exit briefly onto Hwy 1 N. At the River St. signal, turn RT on Hwy 9. Continue several blocks, then turn LF on Golf Club Drive. Park along road before the train trestle. No restrooms
QUAIL HOLLOW RANCH Take Hwy 17 to Scotts Valley. Exit at Mt. Hermon Rd; turn RT. Continue through Scotts Valley to Felton. At the stop sign, turn LF briefly onto Graham Hill Rd. At the next signal light, turn LF onto Zayante Road. After 2 miles, turn LF on Quail Hollow Road, just past the fire station. Turn RT at ranch entrance; meet near Nature Center.
STEVENS CREEK COUNTY PARK—one-way hike w/ shuttle From Hwy 280 in Cupertino, take Foothill Blvd S, which becomes Stevens Canyon Road and continue about 2 miles. Turn LF at the main park entrance and park below the road— if you reach the dam, you have gone too far. (Shuttle cars will park further upstream near Madrone Picnic Area.)
SWEENEY RIDGE (GGNRA)—one-way hike w/ shuttleEveryone: From Hwy 280 in Millbrae, exit N on Hwy 35/Skyline towards Pacifica. At the 3rd light, (College Dr.), turn LF. At the Skyline College sign, turn LF. Continue past sports field. Turn LF into Parking Lot #2; go uphill 50 yards & park in GGNRA spaces on the LF. No restrooms. Shuttle drivers only: Turn LF at 2nd light instead (Sneath Lane). Follow Sneath to its end (about 1 mile). Park shuttle vehicles along road. Rejoin class at Skyline College trailhead described above.
WINDY HILL OPEN SPACE —lower From Hwy 280 in Portola Valley, take Alpine Road exit. At first stop sign (2.9 miles), turn RT on Portola Rd. After 0.8 miles, turn LF into parking lot at trailhead. This site was last updated 01/09/10 |
